Why Am I Coughing When I Eat or Drink? It Could Be Dysphagia
Do you often cough when you're eating or drinking?
Maybe it happens with water. Or soft foods.
Maybe people tell you, “Take your time,” or “Chew better.”
But you still feel like something isn’t quite right.
If this sounds like you, you could have something called dysphagia.
Let’s talk about what that means – and how you can get help.
What is Dysphagia?
Dysphagia (say: dis-FAY-juh) means it’s hard to swallow.
It can happen to anyone, but it’s more common after a stroke, or if you have Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, or another brain condition.
When swallowing isn’t working properly, food or drink can go down the wrong way – into your airway instead of your stomach.
This makes you cough, or feel like something’s stuck in your throat.
Signs of a Swallowing Problem
Here are some common signs:
Coughing or choking when eating or drinking
A wet or gurgly voice after swallowing
Feeling like food gets stuck in your throat or chest
Needing to clear your throat a lot
Taking a long time to finish meals
Avoiding certain foods (like dry bread or water)
Getting tired or out of breath while eating
Some people may also lose weight without meaning to, or feel nervous about eating with others.
Is It Serious?
Swallowing problems can be serious – but they can be managed.
If food or drink goes into your lungs (instead of your stomach), it can cause a chest infection or pneumonia.
You might also stop eating enough, which can affect your energy and mood.
That’s why it’s important to speak to someone who understands dysphagia.
How Can a Speech Therapist Help?
Speech and language therapists don’t just help with talking – they also help people eat and drink safely.
A therapist will:
Check your swallowing with a gentle, in-depth assessment
Help you find easier ways to swallow
Recommend safer food and drink options
Show you postures and techniques to stop coughing
Offer ongoing support and answer your questions
Therapy is tailored just for you, whether you’re at home, in clinic, or online.
You’re Not Alone – And It’s Not Your Fault
Many people feel embarrassed about coughing or choking at meals.
They stop going out. They avoid eating in front of family or friends.
Some even stop drinking enough because they’re scared.
But help is available – and it works.
You deserve to enjoy meals again without fear or frustration.
